The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office said Thursday that it determined one of the people killed in a shooting Wednesday night in the village of Tangipahoa is their suspect.
Investigators say Jayvelyn Smith got into a fight with Genesis Kelly at a residence on Spruce Lane and Center Street. They say Smith drew his gun and in the process, shot himself in the leg.
The argument continued outside the residence and Smith fatally shot Kelly. Smith later died at the hospital from the self-inflicted gunshot wound.
A third individual, a 16-year-old boy, was also shot and is hospitalized in stable condition.
"This was an unnecessary situation that has now left three families tragically affected and our town in disbelief," said village of Tangipahoa Police Chief Darrell Martin.
