The New Orleans Police Violent Offenders Warrant Squad, and deputy U.S. Marshals from New Orleans and Houston arrested Jabril Cowart in the December 23 shooting death of Brandon "Boogie B" Montrell.

Montrell was shot to death in the 700 block of Barronne St. two days before Christmas.

"As investigation into the incident progressed, NOPD Homicide Unit detectives developed and positively identified Cowart as one of two suspected perpetrators," police said in a news release. "Detective then obtained an arrest warrant for Cowart on a charge of second-degree murder."

Cops located Cowart in the Houston area Thursday and arrested him there. He will be extradited to Louisiana to face charges of second-degree murder.

Word of Cowart's arrest comes just hours after NOPD Interim Police Chief Michelle Woodfork confirmed that detectives have obtained an arrest warrant in the murder. She declined to name Cowart at that time because he had not been taken into custody yet.

Police say the investigation remains open and ongoing, and anyone who has information should call NOPD Homicide Det. Marylou Agustin at (504) 658-5300, or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111 or toll free at (877) 903-7867 (STOP).

Callers to Crimestoppers do not have to leave their names and may be eligible for a cash reward for information that leads to an arrest and indictment.
