A suspect is dead after being shot by a Jefferson Parish deputy sheriff. Sheriff Joe Lopinto says his deputies, acting on a tip from New Orleans Police, went to the Lumiere apartments at West Esplanade off Causeway, looking for a man wanted in New Orleans in a shooting.
The sheriff says the suspect tried to make a run for it in a stolen car.
"Running into the back of the fence, turning the vehicle wheels forward where I had one of my deputies approaching at the time," said Lopinto. "My deputy ended up firing shots into the windshield, against the suspect, and killed him on scene."
Sheriff Lopinto said the suspect is someone their office has dealt with in the past.
"He's been arrested numerous times in New Orleans and Jefferson Parish, many times here in Jefferson Parish for New Orleans warrants," said Lopinto. "We know he had an active warrant for a shooting in New Orleans."
The case remains under investigation.
