Thibodaux Police say a man's body was pulled from the water early this morning after he tried to swim away from cops during a chase.

"A subject leaped into the water following a pursuit between the subject and the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office," TPD said in a post. "Shortly after 2:00 a.m., the deceased body of the subject was located in the area of Bayou Lafourche not far from the area he was last seen."

It started when Thibodaux Police officers, Assumption Parish sheriff’s deputies and other agencies pursued the suspect.

The chase ended on the Jackson Street bridge.

Lieutenant Clint J. Dempster  said, "Subject leaped into the water following a pursuit... driver fled from the vehicle while it was still moving on the Jackson Street bridge and leaped over the railing of the bridge into the water. The subject did surface at some point but appeared that he was having difficulty staying above water. As officers entered the water in attempt to render aid, the subject was unable to be located."

Police did not initially say why they were chasing the suspect.
