A Family Justice Center employee is facing felony hit-and-run charges in connection with a crash that left a woman dead.
Shermaine Scipio is accused of hitting a woman at the foot of the Danziger Bridge early Thursday morning before driving away.
NOPD Captain Buddy Micheu says they discovered Scipio's damaged car outside of her office on Loyola Street and tied it to the crime. In fact, Micheu says Scipio surrendered to police this morning once she learned she was wanted.
"Anytime you're involved in a crash, whether it's a pedestrian, a bicyclist, or any of those measures, it becomes a felony when you fail to stop and fail to give information and render aid or call for police assistance," Micheu said. "The mere fact that you can call 911 and say you just struck something and get out there and try to be supportive is just mankind, human nature. We should not have a situation where a human is treated . . . An animal is sometimes is treated better than that. We have people who get out of their car and bring an animal to the hospital. We got to be more . . . We have to be better."
Micheu did not release the victim's name.
The crash is still under investigation.
