A seventeen-year-old suspect pleaded guilty Friday to manslaughter in the killing of a tourist in New Orleans last year.

Malik Cornelius pleaded down from second-degree murder and will receive a 26-year sentence, according to NOLA.com.

Cornelius admits to taking part in the fatal shooting of 32-year-old Jacob Carter, a bagel shop owner from Tacoma, Washington, in January 2024.

A group of armed suspects had surrounded Carter and his husband, Daniel Blagovich, at Kerlerec and Bourbon Streets on January 5 in an attempt to rob them. Carter was fatally shot.

Prosecutors said Cornelius helped sink a stolen Kia Optima used in the crime in Bayou St. John. They also said DNA evidence linked Cornelius to the murder weapon.

Sentencing is set for May 19.
