Suspect leads police on multistate chase, standoff ends in Marrero

Marrero Standoff
Louisiana State Police

A standoff between authorities and a suspect who led police on a pursuit across state lines came to a peaceful end around 2 p.m. in Marrero.

State troopers say the driver involved in the standoff fled from a Pearl River County, Mississippi, sheriff's deputy during a traffic stop on I-59 South near mile marker 19. During the stop, the deputy noticed the driver had a gun on his front seat.

The driver then led authorities on a chase into Louisiana, onto Interstate 10 West through St. Tammany and Orleans Parishes and into Jefferson Parish. Troopers used spike strips to force the suspect to stop on elevated portion of the Westbank Expressway near Westwood Drive. The driver then barricaded himself inside his car and is refusing to surrender to police.

State troopers, Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputies, and other law enforcement agencies responded to scene. Traffic in the area was diverted for hours while authorities talked the suspect into surrendering.
