With water mains bursting open one after another, officials have released a plan to try and get things under control.
"In light of the recent increase in water transmission main breaks, the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO) is releasing an action plan to stabilize the drinking water distribution system and develop a citywide conditions assessment," the agency released.
They say the strategy includes figuring out which pipes are most likely to blow apart next and take care of those first.
The plan includes the following steps:
-Immediately address urgent risk transmission mains
-Conduct a pilot test on a subsection of the oldest water mains
-Issue an RFI for information on emerging technologies
-Develop next set of priority projects based on information gathered in steps 1-3
-Evaluate hydraulic conditions in targeted areas
-Conduct a citywide conditions assessment
S&WB leaders say each step includes an estimated timeline and funding needs.
The report says to address the eight most urgent water mains at risk of breaking apart next, it will cost $27.5 million.
