While much of the political buzz in New Orleans centers around the upcoming mayoral race, UNO political analyst Dr. Ed Chervenak says voters should be paying close attention to another powerful position, the City Council At-Large seats.

“These aren’t just ceremonial roles,” Chervenak explained. “At-large members represent the entire city, not just a single district, and the one who serves as council president is next in line if the mayor can’t fulfill their duties.”

That added responsibility, he says, makes these seats some of the most critical on the ballot.

With current Councilwoman Helena Moreno officially entering the mayoral race, two candidates have already stepped forward to fill her at-large seat: State Representative Delisha Boyd and State Representative Matt Willard. Chervenak says Willard is the more recognizable name with strong support for his work at the state level.

As for the other at-large seat, currently held by Councilman JP Morrell, Chervenak notes that there's no indication of a serious challenger at this point.

“There's nothing to suggest Morrell won't hold onto his seat as of now,” he said.

Interest in these races is growing, especially as voters realize just how much influence the council can have over citywide policies, budgets, and even mayoral succession.

With election season heating up, Chervenak says the New Orleans City Council At-Large races could prove just as pivotal as the mayor’s contest in shaping the future direction of New Orleans.
