The New Orleans Police Department has arrested a 15-year-old boy in the investigation of a fatal hit-and-run crash that happened Tuesday in the Desire neighborhood.
The fatal crash happened in the early hours of the morning at the intersection of Alvar and Chickasaw streets and left one person dead.
“Through investigation, it was determined that at about 12:23 a.m., the driver of a 2016 Honda Accord was traveling southbound on Alvar Street at a high rate of speed.
The driver then disregarded a red traffic light and collided with a 2014 Nissan Altima, which was turning southbound with the green traffic light onto Alvar Street from Chickasaw Street,” said an NOPD report.
After the crash, the driver of the Honda then lost control of the vehicle and ran onto the neutral ground, causing the vehicle to overturn. A passenger inside the Honda was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced deceased.
The driver of the Honda and a second passenger then reportedly exited the vehicle and fled on foot. The driver of the Nissan was not injured in the incident.
As the investigation progressed, investigators learned the Honda was reported stolen on May 1.
Detectives positively identified the known 15-year-old juvenile male suspect as the driver of the Honda. The juvenile was found, arrested, and booked into the Juvenile Justice Intervention Center for felony hit-and-run and possession of stolen property.
