A Washington Parish teenager is facing up to 40 years in prison after a jury convicted him of manslaughter in a deadly shooting near Bogalusa High School's football stadium.

Sentencing for LaKendall Brown, 19, is scheduled for April 10.

Brown shot and killed Jerry Smith, 16, on the night of October 14, 2022, just feet away from where Bogalusa High was playing its homecoming football game. Prosecutors told the jury that a total of 18 shots were fired during the shootout and that a witness saw Brown with a gun in his hands seconds after the gunfight ended. Prosecutors also said it's impossible to prove who shot at who first, but because the shooters were all aggressors in the matter, no one could claim self-defense.

Brown was also convicted of obstruction of justice and carrying a firearm on school property.
