Tenants owe $100 million in back rent says N.O. housing director

The Biden Administration today extended the federal ban on evictions until July 31st. It was supposed to end next week.

Landlords who were hoping to kick people out for not paying their rent in more than a year were frustrated by the last-minute change.

New Orleans Housing Director Majorianna William says there are 14,000 people on a waiting list for rental assistance.

“If we want to serve our 14,000 it would require close to one hundred million dollars,” said William. “We have no expectation that we will receive a hundred million dollars.”

She anticipates New Orleans will get $42 million in rental assistance, However, William says current tenants in the city owe their landlords more than one hundred million dollars in back rent.
