Newell: Terminating the IV Waste contract is another step in city hall’s long, hard-fought quest to embrace mediocrity

French Quarter residents and business owners have been overwhelmingly pleased with IV Waste’s garbage collection management since being awarded the contract back in December.

Overwhelmingly pleased? ... With a city service?

When was the last time you heard that phrase around here? Sounds like something out of a fairy tale.

But it’s true. That happened. People are happy about IV Waste’s handling of trash pickup in the French Quarter and the business district.

Then, this.

Well, Sidney, it was nice while it lasted. And we thank you for it. It’s been fun having one thing that works. It’s been fun having people who take pride in their services.

Wish it could’ve lasted longer, but that would’ve involved a thing called common sense—and that’s in short supply over at city hall.

It’s back to the idiocracy that we’re served up by this city’s administration, seemingly on a daily basis. It was just yesterday that I wrote about the Civil Service Commission's findings about Cantrell's scandal with the NOPD promotion process. It would’ve been nice to at least have a 72-hour window between having to comment on issues like this.

But I feel the need to ask the question as it relates to the trash pickup: Why now? Why not stick with the contract through the end of the year?

If the NOPD promotion scandal teaches us anything, though, it's that those in charge would always prefer us to write off these choices as boneheaded, nonsensical decision-making, nothing more. In reality, I bet this is a deeply strategic move.

Of course, there’s nothing to prove yet. But we need to follow the scent of money on this one. My hunch is that we ought to follow where Troy Henry decides to place his bets on the upcoming mayoral race and council races. Is he going to try to hire the next mayor?

That’ll be our indicator if we will continue to hire officials who will continue taking us down this path toward mediocrity, the one we’ve so dutifully travelled the past 8 years.

Remember, it’s your money their managing. They decide who gets what. And what we’ve learned over the decades is that it's not at all about meritocracy.
