With the threat of severe weather, it is advised to have a plan in place for shelter and necessities should an emergency arise. City, parish, and school leaders have made decisions in an abundance of caution including closures and early dismissals. Jefferson Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng shared plans for her parish.
“The messaging is, this a day we need to prepare. Time is of the essence.”
Ms. Lee Sheng was firm in saying that, for Jefferson Parish, caution is the top priority in decision making during predicted weather events and her main concern are those who are most vulnerable and will need shelter from the storm.
“We have a lot of people in trailers so we are opening Terrytown Playground as a shelter for anyone who needs assistance.”
Lee Sheng stresses the shelter could be the better option for some residents and they should plan to get there as soon as possible to weather the storm.
“We are expecting winds that could gust up to 60mph and the Terrytown Playground building is a safe structure.”
Per the Jefferson Parish website, the playground is offered to any resident in need of assistance and will remain open until the National Weather Service issues an “all clear” of severe storm threats. Residents in need of emergency assistance can call the Jefferson Parish Emergency Operations Department at (504) 349-5360.
