The family of Geraldine Carmouche filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the New Orleans City Hall, the Mystic Krewe of Nyx, and krewe founder Julie Lea.

Carmouche, 58, was crushed to death when she tried to cross between a tandem float named “Come Away With Me”, during the Krewe of Nyx’s parade last year.

As The Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate reports, the lawsuit alleges gross negligence because the city and Nyx krewe leaders failed to enforce a city ordinance that requires tandem floats to have some type of barrier connecting the two halves of a tandem float, which would prevent people from crossing in between the float.

Attorneys for the woman’s husband, Jimmy Carmouche, and her father, Ernest Turner filed the lawsuit Thursday on their behalf.

The float driver Desmond Williams and the float owner PFJ Floats LLC are also named in the lawsuit.
