St. Bernard saw some incredible wind gusts as Hurricane Zeta blew by.
“The eastern part of the parish where that eastern side of the storm came through, they are telling me, in excess of 120 mph,” St. Bernard Parish President Guy McInnis tells WWL First News.
McInnis says during and even after the storm, the parish experienced clocked wind-gust speeds between 95 and 105 miles per hour. On the east side of the parish, which experienced the eastern side of the storm, McInnis says forecasters clocked wind gusts above 120 miles per hour.
Those incredible wind speeds caused the Chalmette Ferry, which broke free of its moorings and wedged itself under a dock at the Chalmette Refining.
“Tug boats went out there… moved it back to its dock and everything is good with the ferry, so no danger or problems to our citizens because of the ferry,” said McInnis.
Power is out to much of the parish but McInnis says he is confident Entergy is working to quickly restore power.
“Those guys did as much assessment that they could last night; they are continuing to do that today, and they are working on getting us back up today,” said McInnis. I’m very encouraged by what they are doing, and I am encouraged of what the resources that they are bringing in to St. Bernard Parish today.”
