Police in New Orleans arrested three juveniles following a carjacking in front of the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center and a trio of armed robberies within an hour.
The first armed robbery incident happened Monday night at about 11:53 p.m. at the corner of Bourbon Street and Esplanade Avenue.
According to police, three men were walking in the area when three armed suspects approached the men and demanded the victims’ property. The men complied and the suspects fled.
Then, at 12:12 a.m. at the corner of Natchez Street and Picayune Place a woman was robbed at gunpoint by three suspects.
Later, at 12:31 a.m. a man was carjacked at the corner of Convention Center Blvd. and North Diamond Street in front of the Convention Center.
An NOPD report says officers have arrested a 15-year-old juvenile male suspect, a 17-year-old juvenile male, and a 16-year-old juvenile female were arrested a short time following the carjacking at the convention center.
The NOPD did not say if the three juveniles were responsible for the armed robberies or if they were involved in a series of crimes that happened on Saturday and Sunday night in the Marigny which also involved three suspects.
These are the latest crimes the NOPD reports as the Metropolitan Crime Commission data shows crime continues to spiral out of control in New Orleans.
“Overall, armed robbery is up 32% relative to 2021, 57% relative to 2020, and 22% relative to 2019. It is the only category in which we have seen a higher rate of increase relative to 2021 than to 2019,” says MCC President Rafael Goyeneche.
