Qualifying to run for mayor of New Orleans and other city offices starts three months from today.
Helena Moreno, Oliver Thomas, Arthur Hunter, and Tyrell Morris are among the announced candidates for mayor. There will likely be others, but not many who are already household names. Wouldn't the politicians who can raise the money needed to win the mayor's race already be working their network of supporters?
"Usually, yes," said political analyst Clancy DuBos. "But there have been times, a lot of times in fact, when the people who actually won the race didn't announce until relatively late in the game."
DuBos says that's how Mitch Landrieu and Marc Morial handled their campaigns. But they were rumored candidates leading up to there announcements, and DuBos says this time around, the rumor mill has been quiet.
"I'm not hearing any other big names that might jump in," he said, "although anything's possible."
DuBos said there may also be surprises in other races, like sheriff or city council.
