A Bridge City man died after speeding away from Westwego Police early this morning, according to Louisiana State Police.

Fifty-one-year-old Frederick Walter was killed in a single-vehicle crash on U.S. 90 near Circle West Drive near Westwego around 1:00 a.m. Saturday.

"The initial investigation revealed that Walter was driving a 2016 Honda Accord west on U.S. 90 in the city limits of Westwego," said Trooper Kate Stegall. "An officer from the Westwego Police Department conducted a traffic stop on the Honda."

Authorities say during the stop, Walter drove away.

"Walter continued west on U.S. 90 at a high rate of speed," Stegall continued. "As he approached the area of Circle West Drive, Walter lost control of the vehicle and traveled off the right side of the roadway before flipping several times."

Walter was ejected from the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries. A front-seat passenger who was wearing a seatbelt reveived minor injuries.

Trooper Stegall said driver impairment is suspected, and toxicology tests are pending.
