The National Hurricane Center says there is a high chance of a disturbance in the Gulf becoming a tropical storm or depression this week.

"Although environmental conditions appear to be marginally conducive, gradual development is becoming more likely, and a tropical depression is likely to form during the middle or latter portion of the week," the NHC posted.

They are watching a trough of low pressure in the southwestern Gulf.

"This system is expected to drift eastward over the next few days, before it turns northward."

WWL TV Meteorologist Payton Malone says while the system is currently producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms, it is expected to get better organized.

He does not, however, expect it to become a strong hurricane.

"Strong wind shear across the northern Gulf should keep this system weak as it drifts over the Gulf."

Malone says, while it is early, several models bring the system to Southeast Louisiana.

"Forecast confidence remains low on exactly where it goes and how strong it becomes, but some guidance brings the system northeast toward the north central Gulf Coast by Friday or the weekend."

He stresses that the eventual path is not clear.

"This is still several days away, so expect changes in the forecast as the system develops and models get a better handle on its track."
