Upcoming temperature swing nothing out of the ordinary

In one fell swoop, Louisiana will be going from summer to winter.

Over the next week, you be trading your short sleeves for jackets and coats, only to switch back to short sleeves by the middle of next week. That's because a cold front will be taking temperatures from his high as the mid-80s to as low as the mid-30s by Saturday. According to one weather analyst, the temperature swing we'll see in the next few days is nothing new for Louisiana.

"This is perfectly, totally, 100-percent normal for Louisiana," LSU Health climatologist Barry Keim said. "We're in what we call the swing season."

According to Keim, these temperature swings happen in south Louisiana every fall and every spring: cooler temperatures stick around for a few days and then warmer conditions return. Keim says we'll see that exact scenario play out over the next week.

"This is New Orleans (and) swing season time," Keim said. "It's pretty chilly now. I'm sure in the next week to 10 days or so, we'll probably be looking at temperatures in the upper 70s and 80s again."

Keim reminds you not to get too attached to your sweaters and coats, because you'll be putting them back in the closet next week.

"You get these little tastes of winter, and then a few days later, the pendulum swings in the other direction, and you're back in summer again," Keim said. "Just hang on for the ride."
