As the U.S. and other western powers move to restrict Russian energy sources, Louisiana's Sen. Bill Cassidy says the U.S. needs to accelerate production to make up for the shortfall. So what would that take?
"Nothing is going to get you oil production overnight," said Tulane Energy Institute professor Eric Smith.
Smith says domestic energy producers are already cranking out as much as they can: "Oil companies like to drill wells and they like to make money."
So in order to do what Sen. Bill Cassidy suggests, to create an "Operation Warp Speed" for energy production, the Biden administration will have to get on board.
"The government has a sort of go-slow process on well permits, a go-slow process on pipelines and right-of-ways," that Prof. Smith says needs to be dealt with.
