Surveillance video from a nearby business shows what happened when a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office deputy shot a driver who wouldn't stop following the Krewe of Music parade in Marrero Monday night.

WWL-TV obtained the video that shows the deputy drawing her weapon, then firing, as the 59-year-old's SUV kept advancing.

Sergeant Brandon Veal, spokesman for JPSO, said the shooting happened after the parade had passed, and that deputies were handling traffic as the parade crowd dispersed.

"While directing traffic, an adult male driving a sport utility vehicle tried to exit through an unauthorized portion of a nearby parking lot where a deputy was standing," said Veal. "The man drove the vehicle over the curb towards the deputy and refused to adhere to instructions to stop. After the man continued to drive forward, the deputy retrieved her service weapon and fired at the man striking him once."

The driver, 59-year-old Ernest Sam of Marrero, told NOLA.com that he came to a complete stop as ordered. It was after he stopped that the deputy shot him, he said.

"I came forward, then she told me to stop, and then she comes and walks towards the truck and she shot," Sams told the publication.

Sam was transported to an area hospital where his condition is listed as stable.
