Tracy's Original Irish Channel Pub, a notable NOLA hotspot, is closing May 31st… part of a larger, recent trend of local favorites going under.

NOLA.com food writer Ian McNulty emphasizes how important it is to actually frequent the places you love so they can afford to stick around.

"I've been going to smaller restaurants lately as a pledge I've made to myself recently," McNulty said to our own Tommy Tucker.

"I always get people telling me 'oh, I'm shocked! I can't believe Mopho and Justine's and Tracey's closed,' but if you've got a neighborhood spot you love ... whether it's down the street or across town ... it's about time to check it out again. Go for another visit," McNulty went on to add.

McNulty notes that most New Orleans bars and restaurants are family or individually owned spots, making their footing especially fragile during slow times.

This reality makes it more important to pop in and grab a beer or a burger or whatever else you may be craving ... for the greater good of the local economy. Money spent in the city tends to stay in the city, and while the recent closings of these longstanding New Orleans institutions may be sad, they're a reminder to enjoy what we have while it's here.
