As the year draws to a close a new Gallup poll finds people aren't happy with how it's turning out.

The two-week poll Gallup released right before Christmas shows a majority of Americans unhappy with the direction the country is going in.

Robert Hogan, head of the political science department at LSU, says people clearly want to see their leaders do better.

"Views of Congress and both parties appear to be very weak," said Hogan. "People are dissatisfied with the direction of the country. About 74 percent say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going."

Overall approval of Congress is 17 percent, and President Trump's approval is the lowest so far in his second term, at 36 percent.

"There's a great deal of, I guess, uncertainty on the part of the public," Hogan said. "People are not as joyous or feeling that things are going as well as a lot of politicians these days in Congress would like for voters to believe."
