Water line failure leads to Uptown boil water advisory

The New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board has issued a precautionary boil water advisory for a portion of Uptown New Orleans.

It includes:

-S. Claiborne Ave from Calhoun St. to Robert St.
-Robert St. from S. Claiborne Ave. to River
-Mississippi River from Robert St. to Exposition Blvd
-Exposition Blvd. from River to St. Charles Ave.

"Water pressures in this area fell below 20 pounds per square inch (psi) due to the failure of a 30 inch water main valve. Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans crews are onsite, and repairs are underway," according to a news release. "SWBNO will notify residents when testing has begun."

Crews did a temporary emergency repair last night by capping the water valve.

"Starting this weekend into next week crews wil begin permanent repairs. Customers will be notified of an outage ahead of time, but we anticipate this will only be customers along S. Claiborne Ave."

The SWB says that residents in the affected areas are advised to use bottled or boiled tap water to drink, cook, clean food or brush teeth until further notice.

"Residents with compromised immune systems should also use safe water to wash hands, shower or bathe. SWBNO, in partnership with the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH), issues boil water advisories out of an abundance of caution for areas where water pressure drops below 20 psi."
