Water main fixed, pressure returning to Jefferson Parish's Eastbank

Water pressure is slowly returning to the Eastbank of Jefferson Parish today.

Workers have repaired a huge busted pipe near the water treatment plant.

"Workers were constantly going ever since we got the break," Water Department Director Sidney Bazley explained.

He says it will be late this morning before everyone has water pressure returned.

"It's going to take a few hours," he said at six o' clock this morning. "The pressure is going to start around the plant first, then it is going to work its way out to the farther reaches of the Eastbank."

Even when homes and businesses get full pressure, they are advised to boil the water before consuming it.

"This boil water advisory will remain in effect until rescinded by the Jefferson Parish Water Department or the LDH," according to a news release. "Bacteriological samples from the distribution system will be collected and analyzed to assure the water meets potable water standards."

All schools and public buildings on the Eastbank of Jefferson Parish are closed today.

The airport closed restrooms and restaurants.

Bazley believes the weather over the past several months contributed to the water main breaking.

"We had a major drought last year, followed up with rain and a freeze event."

He says that has left soil conditions that have caused breaks across the region recently.
