UPDATE FROM LOUISIANA DoTD;: 11:30 a.m., Saturday, January 25, 2025: The elevated expressway (US 90B) has been cleared and is reopening. Officials expect all exits and entrances to be accessible by noon today. DOTD thanks the public for their patience and reminds them to drive cautiously until all snow/moisture has evaporated from the highway surface.
ORIGINAL ARTICLE: The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development closed the elevated Westbank Expressway Saturday morning because of icy patches that formed overnight.
"Crews are onsite working to break up/treat any ice and estimate to have the entire stretch reopened by early afternoon," the DoTD announced.
All traffic is being diverted to the Gen. De Gaulle exit at the Westbank side of the Crescent City Connection.
"DOTD’s emergency personnel will continue to monitor upcoming weather situations and will scout the area for safety on the roadways," the agency said.
Tuesday's snow storm and the freezing week that followed kept the roadway closed until late Friday afternoon.
With highs in the 50s today and sunshine, the expressway should not be closed for an extended period, and no ice should form tonight with lows well above freezing in the 40s.
