Who will be the Saints' next head coach?

With Sean Payton stepping away from the game the Black and Gold are going to need a new head coach. Could that coach already be in the building? Many fans are clamoring for defensive coordinator Dennis Allen to get the nod, but even if he is the choice it won’t happen immediately.

“Even if Dennis Allen were the automatic heir to this job there are protocols, you have to interview a certain amount of people,” Voice of the Saints Mike Hoss told WWL. “If Dennis Allen is the guy they’ll make that call, but it won’t be for some time, and not to mention there are other teams interested in Dennis Allen.”

NFL rules require teams to interview at least one minority candidate for an open senior leadership position.

When Sean Payton took over the Saints in 2006 it wasn't an attractive job, and it wasn't even the legend's first choice. 16 years later he leaves behind a team with a strong culture that Hoss said is a very attractive opening for a coach interested in winning now.

“You are walking into an established team that respects winning, the tough part is no matter what you do you are going to be compared to Sean Payton,” said Hoss. “I don’t want to be the guy who replaces Sean Payton, I want to be the guy who replaces the guy who replaces Sean Payton.”
