Should you have to pay to get your car back from an impound lot or towing company after it was stolen? Members of a City Council say you shouldn’t, and one says right now you legally don’t have to but it is happening anyway.
“I’ve been contacted with people as far back as 2020 who were carjacked and had to pay to get their vehicles back,” said Council VP JP Morrell.
“This is not a new process, the city has been violating the law probably since we passed the law in 2017.”
A Council committee took up the issue today and unanimously voted to send a proposal that would reimburse those who have had to pay to get their cars back to the full council. Morrell noted that current law allows impound lots to keep your car if you can’t afford to get it out, which means the price tag for reimbursements could end up being higher than expected.
