Voters get to do it all over again in just under five weeks, with runoffs in both major parties for U.S. Senate. New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno wants to make sure voters know what they're in for.
Louisiana's new closed party primary system for Senate and some other races led to reports of confusion in some precincts. Some people who registered to vote decades ago didn't even remember they were in a party and couldn't vote for their candidate of choice.
New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno says she's hearing from people who are fearing a repeat.
"When it comes to the closed party runoffs, when is that election, how does that work?" the mayor said she's hearing. "So the closed party runoff, that is going to happen on June 27th, so next month you will be voting again."
The mayor said no-party voters who picked a party Saturday will have to stick with that party again on June 27.
Moreno said in New Orleans alone, there are more than 70,000 voters who are not registered under any political party.
Statewide, around 27 percent of voters are registered as having no party affiliation.
