You've all heard the cries of snow, ice, and frozen weather that's about to visit the New Orleans area. We'll see about snow, but we all must prepare for the extreme cold temperatures.

If you're wondering what this means for you, you've come to the right place, because all throughout the week I've been interviewing folks about what to expect and how to prepare.

Pet Safety

I interviewed Jeff Dorson, Executive Director of the Louisiana Humane Society. He gave tips for those who own pets or livestock during this cold snap.

“If you go outside and you’re cold, so is your animal,” says Dorson. “Who wants to be tied to a tree in the freezing weather?”

“There’s a law in Louisiana,” says Dorson, “that you have to provide shelter to pets.” So if you see an animal stuck outside, you can phone the police, who will check out the situation.

Home Safety

We're all going to try to stay warm, but you have to do so safely. On this front, I spoke with Captain Edwin Holmes at the New Orleans Fire Department who explained how to keep warm responsibly. He shares some do’s and dont's.

Tip#1? Avoid alternative heating sources, like using a stove as a space heater because it unleashes a lot of carbon monoxide an d increases chances of housefires.

Plant Safety

Finally, I had a great interview with Paul Lagrange, Host of The Home Improvement Show and owner of Lagrange Consulting. He explained how conditions might affect your plants and gardens.

Notably, he told me the difference about what to expect for your plant life if you live on the Northshore vs the Southshore.
