New Orleans Police are working to determine why a cab driver hit and curb and sped his taxi into a wall on Canal Street, killing the woman in the back seat.
"At about 1:48 p.m., NOPD Eighth District officers responded to the location on a reported vehicle crash with injury," according to a news release.
Investigators say it happened as the taxi driver was heading toward the river at the foot of Canal.
"The cab reportedly struck a curb and, for unknown reasons, accelerated and drove straight into a wall."
The woman in the back seat died.
"NOPD Traffic Fatality Unit detectives are investigating this incident. At the time of this writing, no arrests have been made."
