A Mississippi woman is dead after her vehicle collided with a St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office vehicle. The crash happened early Sunday morning on the I-10 Bonnet Carre spillway bridge.
The deputy sheriff had stopped his fully-marked 2021 Chevy Tahoe in the left lane to assist a motorist whose car had been involved in a previous crash. According to Louisiana State Police, even though the sheriff's units' emergency lights were flashing, 23-year-old Alexis Jones of Woodville, Mississippi failed to stop or avoid it and crashed into the SUV.
"Jones was unrestrained at the time of the crash, suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital where she later died," said Trooper Kate Stegall. A passenger in Jones' car was also injured and taken to the hospital.
The crash remains under investigation, but investigators suspect impairment to be a factor in the crash.
