A church that hoped to positively influence its congregation and passers-by to protect themselves against COVID found its message not well-received Friday morning. Shawn Moses Anglim, pastor at First Grace United Methodist Church, found that a changeable letterboard sign outside the place of worship had been vandalized.

It had read, “Love thy neighbor. Get vaccinated,” but sometime in the night it became defaced by a spray paint-wielding vandal who obscured the word “vaccinated” and painted “Revelations 13:17” beneath the message. They also painted the words “Faith over fear” on the cement walkway leading to the church’s front steps.

The Bible verse referenced in the graffiti reads, “And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.”

On its face, the sum-total of the graffiti seems to equate the COVID vaccination with the Antichrist.

Anglim shared photos of the crime on Facebook.

Part of Anglim’s post that accompanied the photos read, “There is a lot of anger out there… we need to be praying for each other.”

Anglim said members of the congregation will begin cleanup today at noon at 3401 Canal Street. Volunteers are welcome.
