DETROIT (WWJ) - A 14-year-old is dead after police say he shot himself while making a music video for social media with other teens on Thursday morning on Detroit's east side.
The incident happened shortly before 1:30 a.m. at a home on Fordham Street, in the area of Seven Mile and Kelly Roads. Police believe the teens were playing with the gun and it accidentally went off.
The 14-year-old was pronounced dead at the home. His name has not been released.
Detroit police officials say three other teens and three adults were inside the home when the gun went off. Two teens have been taken into custody and one was questioned with their parents.
Police are searching for the third teen, who allegedly gave a bogus name at the scene early Thursday morning before fleeing.
The gun was allegedly stolen out of an unlocked car in Chesterfield Township, according to Assistant Detroit Police Chief Charles Fitzgerald.
"Kids call it car hopping. What they do is they drive out to the suburban cities -- or even our city -- four people hop out of a car and they (check) the handles of cars. If cars are open, they jump in and take what they can. That’s how they got this gun in Chesterfield Township two days ago," Fitzgerald told reporters, Thursday afternoon.
WWJ's Charlie Langton spoke with the child's mother, who said she was at her sister's birthday party when the shooting happened. She said her 14-year-old boy was a ninth grader at Denby High.
A neighbor, identified as Star, said there are always people coming and going from the home, but there has never been any trouble.
"That's crazy," Star told Langton early Thursday morning. "I'm really in shock, like especially in this neighborhood. You always see them laughing playing so for that to happen... it's sad."
Fitzgerald said later in the day the victim had been staying at the home since December and had been without a home for “quite some time." Investigators believe the woman who owns the home "was kind enough" to take several of the teens in to live with her, but "other issues came about."
Police found a lot of other stolen goods at the home, including stolen car fobs. Neighbors told police they saw people moving stolen cars from the home prior to police showing up.
