MACKINAW CITY (WWJ) -- A 69-year-old woman is in trouble with the police after she tried to cross the Mackinac Bridge when it was closed because she was "tired of waiting."

9&10 News reports the woman, who is from Newberry in the Upper Peninsula, insisted on crossing the bridge while it was shut down last Thursday around 4:15 p.m.

Following a 12-hour closure due to hazardous weather conditions, the woman, while parked on the south end of the bridge, told police that she was tired of waiting for it to open and she just wanted to go home.

She eventually left, but returned an hour later and proceeded to cross northbound in the southbound lanes, according to the TV station.

Mackinaw City Police stopped her, issued her a citation and escorted her off the bridge.

The woman was cited for disobeying a lawful order of a police officer and disregarding a traffic control device, according to 9&10 News.

There were no further incidents, police said.
