The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the recall of Lidl U.S. advent calendars, after it was discovered the cream-filled chocolate inside could be contaminated with salmonella.
Lidl shared that salmonella was detected while the company was completing routine testing of its products.
The affected items were 8.4-ounce Favornia-branded seasonal items with a best-if-used-by date of 2023, sold at Lidl stores from Oct. 5 to Dec. 5, the recall notice said.
Additionally, the recalled calendars have a barcode number of 4056489516965.
Salmonella is responsible for 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations, and 420 deaths in the U.S. each year, according to CDC estimates.
The organism causes serious and sometimes fatal infections for those who are young, elderly, or have weakened immune systems. For those seen as healthy, often symptoms seen upon infection include fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and others.
Because of this, those who have purchased items recalled by Lindl should throw them out or return them to a Lidl store to receive a refund.
For more information on the recall, consumers are encouraged to call the company at (844) 747-5435.
