Joining the direction of other Fortune 500 companies like Amazon and Starbucks, employees at an Apple store outside of Baltimore voted on Saturday to unionize.
The store, located at the Towson Town Center, employs more than 100 people who were eligible to vote and did so in a 65 to 33 vote in favor of organizing, the National Labor Relations Board reported.
The vote has now created the first union of Apple retail employees in the United States. The group calls itself the Apple Coalition of Organized Retail Employees, The New York Times reported.
The Apple Coalition of Organized Retail Employees has also joined the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The international president of IAM, Robert Martinez Jr., shared with Journal his feelings about the store unionizing.
"I applaud the courage displayed by CORE members at the Apple store in Towson for achieving this historic victory," Martinez said. "They made a huge sacrifice for thousands of Apple employees across the nation who had all eyes on this election."
Martinez continued praising what he called a victory as it "shows the growing demand for unions at Apple stores and different industries across our nation."
He then called on Tim Cook, Apple's long-time Chief Executive, who took over for Apple founder Steve Jobs after his passing.
Apple has not commented on the move from the Baltimore store, declining comments from several news outlets.
Apple recently announced a pay hike for its 65,000 retail employees at more than 250 U.S. retail stores. The bump was to $22 an hour or higher, depending on the store's market. This was a 45% increase from its last pay increase in 2018, the Journal reported
According to an internal memo from Apple reviewed by the Journal, some employees would be seeing the raise a bit sooner with the company moving up annual reviews to as early as July.
But the move to unionize is still continuing, with workers at Apple stores in Atlanta and New York City declaring their intent to vote on unionization.
