A father shared that his 10-month-old suffered an accidental fentanyl overdose on Tuesday while playing on a playground. Thanks to the San Francisco Fire Department, the baby was saved with Narcan.

The father of the child shared the news with The San Francisco Chronicle. He said that the incident occurred at a Marina district playground.

It isn’t known how the child came in contact with the fentanyl or ingested it, but the child’s father took to the social media site Nextdoor to share what had happened.

“Our baby went to the ER today and barely survived because he found and ingested fentanyl while playing,” the father wrote on Nextdoor.

The nanny watching the child contacted the authorities after noticing the child was overdosing, and thanks to the quick action from the San Francisco Fire Department, the 10-month-old received Narcan, an overdose-reversing medication.

San Francisco Supervisor Hillary Ronen talked about the incident on Twitter, calling it shocking.

“This incident should be a tipping point. I am truly horrified by this,” Ronen wrote.

Police are still investigating what happened and how the baby could have come in contact with the dangerous substance. San Francisco Supervisor Catherine Stefani shared that the city’s drug crisis is “out of control and it’s affecting all corners of our city,” KRON4 reported.

“It’s absolutely unacceptable that children can’t safely play in our parks because traces of fentanyl or drug paraphernalia are present. Hopefully, this will serve as a wake-up call to those who are content with our status quo,” Stefani wrote.

In 2022, more than 500 San Franciscans have fatally overdosed on drugs, and 359 were caused by fentanyl, according to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
