1:35 PM -- Altoona McDonald’s regular recalls encounter with suspected shooter

A routine coffee run turned into an unexpected brush with a suspected shooter at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, according to Larry, a local resident who shared his account of the encounter.

Larry described the moment during an interview with 1010 WINS, saying he was at the restaurant with friends. “A guy came in the door, and I didn’t really look at him,” he said. “I thought everyone was kidding around when one guy said, ‘That looks like the shooter from New York.’”

Initially dismissing the comment as a joke, Larry and others in the McDonald’s laughed it off. The man, later identified as Luigi Mangione, placed his order while Larry went about his business.

“I went to the restroom, and he was sitting in the back,” Larry recalled. “I thought it was one of the employees because they go back there on break, and they put their hoods up. He was in the corner with his hood up.” Larry then left the restaurant to attend church, unaware of the unfolding events.

It wasn’t until later that Larry learned Mangione, the suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had been arrested at the same McDonald’s. “I came back and asked one of the workers, ‘Was that here?’ They said, ‘Yeah,’ and I said, ‘Was I here?’ They said, ‘Yeah, you were sitting over there.’”

Shortly afterward, police officers approached Larry to ask questions about the incident. “They wanted to know if I made a phone call, and I said, ‘No, I didn’t make any phone call. I didn’t know it was him.’”

One McDonald’s employee was the first to recognize Mangione, according to Larry.

“I think the one worker actually thought it was him,” Larry said. “She said it was something about between his eyes and his eyebrows. She says, ‘When I took his order, it was like she got in her mind, oh my God. It’s the guy from New York.’”

12 PM – Suspect faces extradition hearing as warrant alleges ‘written admissions’

An extradition hearing for Luigi Mangione will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the Blair County Courthouse in Pennsylvania, according to the court schedule. Mangione was arraigned at the same courthouse Monday night.

Mangione was arrested at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, but was charged by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, so authorities will seek to have him brought back to the city to face five counts, including second-degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a forged instrument.

The New York arrest warrant issued Tuesday and obtained by 1010 WINS breaks down the charges Mangione faces and some of the evidence from investigators.

Citing an NYPD detective, the warrant alleges “written admissions about the crime” were found on Mangione at the time he was taken into custody at the McDonald’s.

The warrant also indicates for the first time that Brian Thompson, the UnitedHealthcare CEO, died by a “gunshot wound to the torso.”

10:50 AM -- New photos show suspect eating at McDonald's

Photos released by the Pennsylvania State Police on Tuesday show Luigi Mangione eating at a McDonald's around the time of his arrest Monday morning.

The new images—apparently taken from the body-worn cameras of the officers who responded to a call from an employee—show him removing his mask as he sits in a darkened corner of the restaurant at 407 East Plank Rd. in Altoona, Pennsylvania. He appears to be eating a hash brown after removing the mask.

According to a criminal complaint, Mangione initially gave officers a fake ID, and when an officer asked him whether he’d been to New York recently, he “became quiet and started to shake.”

Rookie Officer Tyler Frye said at a news conference Monday that when Mangione pulled down his mask, “we knew that was our guy.”

State police released the photos, along with others, as they seek the public’s help in gathering information on his travel and recent whereabouts in Pennsylvania. They ask anyone with information to call 1-800-4PA-TIPS or submit a tip online.

7 AM – Suspect’s family speaks out as new details emerge about him

“Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest,” Mangione’s family said in a statement posted on social media late Monday by his cousin, Maryland lawmaker Nino Mangione. “We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved.”

A grandson of a wealthy, self-made real estate developer and philanthropist, Luigi Mangione is a cousin of a current Maryland state legislator. Mangione was valedictorian at his elite Baltimore prep school, where his 2016 graduation speech lauded his classmates’ “incredible courage to explore the unknown and try new things.”

He went on to earn undergraduate and graduate degrees in computer science in 2020 from the University of Pennsylvania, a spokesperson said.

Mangione worked for a time for the car-buying website TrueCar and left in 2023, CEO Jantoon Reigersman said by email.

From January to June 2022, Mangione lived at Surfbreak, a “co-living” space at the edge of Honolulu tourist mecca Waikiki.

Like other residents of the shared penthouse catering to remote workers, Mangione underwent a background check, said Josiah Ryan, a spokesperson for owner and founder R.J. Martin.

“Luigi was just widely considered to be a great guy. There were no complaints,” Ryan said. "There was no sign that might point to these alleged crimes they’re saying he committed.”

At Surfbreak, Martin learned Mangione had severe back pain from childhood that interfered with many aspects of his life, from surfing to romance, Ryan said. "He went surfing with R.J. once but it didn’t work out because of his back."

Mangione left Surfbreak to get surgery on the mainland, Ryan said, then later returned to Honolulu and rented an apartment. Martin stopped hearing from Mangione six months to a year ago.

6:30 AM – Photos show McDonald’s where suspect was nabbed

Photos from 1010 WINS reporter Mary-Lyn Buckley show the McDonald’s at 407 East Plank Rd. in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where Luigi Mangione was taken into custody.

Mangione was eating at the restaurant Monday morning when an employee recognized him and notified Altoona police.

Officers arrived to find Mangione sitting at a table in the back of the restaurant, wearing a blue medical mask and looking at a laptop, according to a Pennsylvania police criminal complaint.

He initially gave them a fake ID, but when an officer asked Mangione whether he’d been to New York recently, he “became quiet and started to shake,” the complaint says.

When he pulled his mask down at officers' request, “we knew that was our guy,” rookie Officer Tyler Frye said at a news conference in Hollidaysburg.

He was arrested at 9:15 a.m. In his backpack, police found a black, 3D-printed pistol and a 3D-printed black silencer, the complaint said. Such ghost guns can be assembled at home from parts without a serial number, making them difficult to trace. The pistol had a metal slide and plastic handle with a metal threaded barrel.

Mangione remained jailed in Pennsylvania, where he was initially charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. By late evening, prosecutors in Manhattan had added a charge of murder, according to an online court docket. He's expected to be extradited to New York eventually.

It’s unclear whether Mangione has an attorney who can comment on the allegations. Asked at Monday's arraignment whether he needed a public defender, Mangione asked whether he could “answer that at a future date.”

Police in New York hinted at a potential motive, with NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said Mangione had a three-page, handwritten document that shows “some ill will toward corporate America."

“To the Feds, I’ll keep this short, because I do respect what you do for our country. To save you a lengthy investigation, I state plainly that I wasn’t working with anyone,” the document said, an anonymous law enforcement official told the Associated Press.

It also had a line that said, “I do apologize for any strife or traumas but it had to be done. Frankly, these parasites simply had it coming.”

Investigators have said “delay,” “deny” and “depose” were written on ammunition found near Thompson’s body. The words mimic a phrase used to criticize the insurance industry.
