CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Chicago man has been reuniting people with their lost rings for 35 years.
Cooler temperatures not only signal fall’s arrival but the start of a busy season for the man and his metal detector.
Jim Evans is currently looking for a men’s silver Tiffany wedding band.
“Unfortunately, I’m on a soccer field and he really doesn’t know if he lost it on the soccer field or if he was walking to the car,” Evans told WBBM Newsradio.
He can calibrate his XP Deus for both the right depth and type of metal.
“I’m look for a silver ring. So what I can do is I can eliminate all of the other signals out,” Evans said.
The Uptown retiree charges a fee to show up. If he finds the item, he lets the client decide the reward amount.
“Everybody is ecstatic, you know. I’m kind of like the last hope,” he said.
The metal detectorist remembered the case of a woman who lost a diamond ring and then learned she had cancer.
“She knew where she’d lost it. So, I was not going to not find it. So, I rented a weed whacker, knocked down the brush, looked for three days and finally found it on the third day. And it was a huge ring. So, what I learned is, when somebody throws something, you gotta look behind where they were standing,” Evans said.
Evans said he gets busy now with people losing things in leaves and then in snow.
