Students at Byron Nelson High School in Trophy Club, Texas, were accompanied to school by a furry friend Monday.

“This good boy tried to attend Byron Nelson High School today!” said a Facebook post from the Roanoke Police Department of the dog, which seems to be a golden retriever or yellow lab. “He followed some kids from the Country Acres neighborhood. If you know who this good boy belongs to let them know he is being picked up by Trophy Club Animal Control.”

Roanoke Police Department public information officer Sgt.
Ryan Otero told Audacy that the dog walked from Roanoke to the high school in the neighboring town of Trophy Club. He said the dog was “very friendly,” and that it was corralled in an entrance area of the school.

From there, it was transported to Trophy Club animal control shelter, where Otero said “all it wanted to do was play fetch.”

As of Tuesday, nobody has come forward claiming to be the dog’s owners or with any information about the animal, Otero said. If the dog is not picked up, he said it will most likely be put up for adoption after a certain amount of time.

According to the American Humane organization, approximately 10 million pets are lost in the U.S. every year and millions end up in animal shelters. Of the pets that end up in shelters, only 15% of dogs and 2% of cats in shelters without ID tags or microchips are reunited with their owners.

Anyone with information about the dog can contact Trophy Club’s animal control officer at 682-237-2969.
