Singer and songwriter Eric Clapton says he will not play any venue if it requires audiences to show proof of vaccination.

“Following the PM’s announcement on Monday the 19th of July 2021 I feel honour bound to make an announcement of my own:
I wish to say that I will not perform on any stage where there is a discriminated audience present. Unless there is provision made for all people to attend, I reserve the right to cancel the show,” Eric Clapton wrote in a statement on U.K. social media platform Telegram.

Clapton’s statement comes in response to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s announcement that venues and nightclubs will require proof of a recent COVID negative test or proof of vaccination before entering.

“I don’t want to have to close nightclubs again as they have elsewhere,” the Prime Minister said. “We are planning to make full vaccination the condition of entry of nightclubs and other venues where large crowds gather. Proof of a negative test will no longer be enough.”

Clapton is vaccinated, but has been outspoken about his experience with the COVID-19 vaccine and its effectiveness.

Clapton is set to play in New Orleans at the Smoothie King Center on September 18.
