LOS ANGELES (KNX) - Melinda French Gates opened up about the first time she met convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in a sit-down interview with Gayle King on “CBS Morning News.”

The interview, which explored French Gates’ divorce from Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, also covered Gates’ friendship with Epstein.

When asked by King if Bill Gates’ friendship with Epstein played a role in the divorce, French Gates answered, “As I said, it’s not one thing, it was many things. But I did not like that (Bill) had meetings with Jeffrey Epstein, no.”

In addition to saying she “made it clear” to her now ex-husband that she did not like his meetings with Epstein, she recalled the first time she met the disgraced American financier.

It was an experience, French Gates said, she regretted “from the second (she) stepped through the door”, calling Epstein “awful.”

“He was abhorrent. He was evil personified. I had nightmares about it afterwards,” she recalled. “So my heart breaks for these young women, because that’s how I felt. And here I’m an older woman, my God, I feel terrible for (Epstein’s victims). It was awful. He was awful.”

When asked by King if French Gates had told Gates about her concerns and that Gates continued to spend time with Epstein, French Gates answered, “Any of the questions remaining about what Bill’s relationship there was…those are for Bill to answer. But I made it very clear how I felt about (Epstein).”

Epstein was found dead in his jail cell on Aug. 10, 2019. Despite myriad conspiracy theories surrounding Epstein’s death, a New York City medical examiner concluded Epstein hung himself using a bedsheet, according to the New York Times.

Although Bill Gates told The Wall Street Journal he did not have “any business relationship or friendship” with Epstein, an investigative piece by the Times revealed Gates and Epstein met in 2011 and had met up many times thereafter.

Since then, Gates has called those meetings a “mistake.”

Bill Gates said in a statement to CBS News, “Meeting with Epstein was a mistake I regret deeply. It was a substantial error in judgment. I remain dedicated to my work at the Gates Foundation in partnership with Melinda, where our focus is to help reduce global inequities, giving every person the chance to live a healthy and productive life.”
