Spending legislation that has become known as the “Big Beautiful Bill” was passed in the House of Representatives today, just meeting President Donald Trump’s July 4 deadline.
While most Republicans championed the bill, it was met with some resistance even within the GOP, and it caused a public fallout between Trump and his ally Elon Musk, who threatened to make a new political party if the bill passed. On the other side of the aisle, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jefferies (D-N.Y.) condemned the bill.
He criticized the legislation as “reckless” and “immoral” with a particular emphasis on its cuts to Medicaid. Supporters of the bill, including Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, have said the bill will help efforts to “seal the border,” provide tax cuts to working class Americans and achieve more of Trump’s “America First” initiatives. Conservatives who have opposed the bill, including Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), have criticized how much it adds to the national debt.
An initial version of the bill first passed in the House in May. This week, the Senate made significant changes to it before it passed the legislation, with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote. It was then sent back to the Senate, where it ultimately passed Thursday and is now set to land on the president’s desk.
“VICTORY!” said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt in an X post just after the bill passed.
