CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Fans didn’t get the outcome they wanted Monday, but a first-round tie for the U.S. Men’s National Team was still something to celebrate, considering they haven’t played in a World Cup in eight years.

At the Chicago Fire’s Fire Pitch facility on the north side, a few of the young fans watching the team play Wales weren’t alive the last time the team qualified for the tournament.

The 1-1 tie felt like a loss after the U.S. led for nearly half the game.

Jorge from Little Village said the team did a good job but should have known not to give up a foul that led to the game-tying penalty kick.

Ten-year-old Kosta was kicking a soccer ball around on turf outside the bar after the game that he described as “nerve-wracking”.

Several U.S. fans shared optimism about the team’s match against England on Friday.
