A new poll has found that a majority of Republican voters say their loyalty lies with their party and not with former President Donald Trump.
The poll from NBC News found that 62% of Republicans identify as GOP supporters instead of just Trump supporters, which could be critical for Trump as he teases a run for the 2024 Presidency.
Of those polled, 30% said they were Trump supporters instead of GOP supporters, and another 4% said they support both Trump and the party the same amount.
The former president has continued to lose support over the last two years, as when the same question was asked in a similar August 2021 poll, 50% of Republicans said they supported the party over Trump.
While most polls have Trump as the favorite for the 2024 Republican nomination, he does have challengers, specifically in Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
During a rally on Saturday, Trump took a shot at DeSantis, calling him "Ron DeSanctimonious" when discussing polling numbers before the crowd in Pennsylvania.
Still, whether it's support for other candidates or the investigations into Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election, it's not clear what is causing the president's numbers to drop.
While DeSantis is polling around the same as Trump — depending on the pollers — neither man has declared that they will run for president in 2024.
Similarly, across the aisle, much is still left to be decided for who will run for the Democrats, as even though President Joe Biden has said he intends to run, the rest of his party does not seem to be convinced it's the best idea.
The NBC News poll surveyed 1,000 voters from Nov. 3 to Nov. 5. There is a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
