As rescue workers continue to sift through the rubble looking for survivors of a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake that rocked Syria and Turkey, one potentially unlikely survivor has been given a new lease on life.

A newborn baby girl was recovered alive from the ruins of a Syrian home, still attached to her deceased mother by her umbilical cord, according to Syrian officials.

“We heard a voice while we were digging,” said Khalil al-Suwadi, a relative of the child.

“We cleared the dust and found the baby with the umbilical cord. So we cut it, and my cousin took her to hospital,” he continued.

The girl was the only survivor in her family. Her parents, an aunt and four siblings all perished in the destruction.

Officials in Turkey and Syria report the death toll of the quake to be at least 7,000 so far.
