A train carrying two tankers of propane derailed Tuesday in Manatee County, Fla., according to the Manatee County government.
Emergency crews from Southern Manatee Fire & Rescue were at the scene at approximately 11:20 a.m. It involved around five railcars.
“No injuries have been reported, and no leakage has been found,” said the county government Tuesday. “Manatee County Emergency Medical Services and Sheriff’s Office personnel have been deployed to the derailment scene along with Manatee County Public Safety personnel, who are standing by to assist with the clearing of the tracks. That process may take some time as the propane must be removed from the tanker before it can be moved.”
Another recent train derailment and fire in East Palestine, Ohio, required attention from the federal government. There have been health concerns related to volatile organic compounds at the site.
That derailment was larger, with 50 of 149 rail cars going off the tracks, Audacy reported last week.
According to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, one of the rail cars involved was carrying 30,000 gallons of liquid propane gas. Others were carrying drywall, said the outlet.
“The derailment took place on a track that's a part of the Seminole Gulf Railroad, which spans 100 miles of track throughout Bradenton, Sarasota, North Naples and Arcadia,” explained the Herald-Tribune. “It’s responsible for hauling the region's liquid propane gas, lumber, building materials, plastics, steel and recycled materials.”
Southern Manatee Fire Rescue Chief Robert Bounds told the outlet that railroad traffic will be impacted while the train tracks in that area are repaired. Debris from the derailment is expected to be cleared away within five to seven days.
Bounds also said an investigation is expected to be conducted by the Florida Department of Transportation or the Federal Railroad Administration.
“We are proud of our first responders,” said Manatee County Board of County Commissioners Chair Kevin Van Ostenbridge regarding the incident. “Their quick action has helped maintain the safety and security of our citizens.”
